Hearing Better in Noise… Step by Step
There is no magic involved when helping patients achieve their maximum potential for Hearing Better in Noise. We take a common sense approach that follows a simple step-by-step process:
Ask the patient “What situations do you want to hear better in?”
Though this seems incredibly simplistic, you would be surprised how often Hearing Care Professionals fail to ask. We use what is called the Client Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI). This simple assessment guide helps us identify both:
- What settings you wish to function better in,
- How you feel you are currently performing in that environment.
During our Hearing Evaluation, we actually test the patient’s performance when confronted by competing background noise.
We do this using a simple test called The Quick Speech in Noise Test. Once we know the extent of your difficulties in noise, we are in a much better position to recommend a course of treatment.
The patient and I (the audiologist) discuss and decide on the best treatment plan, that can be an interplay of Hearing Aid Technology and appropriate Bluetooth Options.
We verify our selected course of treatment’s effectiveness by retesting the patient’s performance in noise.
The Quick Speech in Noise test is redone at conversation levels, and we compare those results to the patient’s optimal ability.
We also verify that we have restored the patient to perceiving speech in the same manner that normal hearing people do (i.e. soft speech is audible, average speech is comfortable, and loud speech is tolerable.)
We validate the success of the fitting by having the patient rate its positive effect on their life, using the International Outcome Inventory0eHearing Aid benefits (IOI-HA).
